Modifying to Meet Your Needs:

There are three main components to the program (travel, connections, interdisciplinary instruction) which serve really as a template. Any country or culture can be added in place of China to meet your specific needs.

Components:

  1. Travel = in place of travel; there are many websites, and programs such as e-pals, language programs, local organizations and speakers that will provide insight into the country of study through interaction with live people.
  2. Connections = Connections are made though the integrated and interdisciplinary approach to teaching the cultural information (see information on interdisciplinary units), the teachers co-teaching lessons, and the interactive activities within the curriculum.
  3. Interdisciplinary Instruction
While this instructional approach is invaluable to the program because of its natural links between the subjects, the curriculum may be taught in independent classrooms with some activities presented to the whole group. The key is for the students to see the teachers co-teaching while interacting with the “focus” culture. This allows the students to make connections between their teachers, the two cultures (home culture and focus culture) and the curriculum.
