Culminating Activity

Dragon Head

Project:

82 Foot Dragon for students to dance under demonstrating what they have learned about and created in relation to the Chinese culture.

Materials:

  • Examples of a Chinese New Year Dragon
  • Template for making the dragons head (Most are paper-maché)
  • 3’x 4’ square pieces of material in different colors (1 per class or homeroom)
  • Extra fabric for tail and to attach body to head
  • Velcro to attach body to head, jingle bells for tail
  • Fabric glue, decorations for the dragons scales (large pom-poms, large sequins, etc.)
  • Examples of student work and materials covered in class to decorate the dragon (Titles of stories, coins, calligraphy..)

Dragon segment

Procedure:

  1. Provide each class or homeroom with bag to collect examples of students work, titles of stories read, and lessons learned throughout the duration of the unit.
  2. Paper-maché dragon head separately (Parents Association, Art classes or Art Club)
  3. Sew the pieces of fabric together.
  4. Rotate classes or homerooms through to design their section of the dragon with their materials and decorations.
  5. Students may also decorate the head and tail or this may be done separately. Attach the body to the head.
