Description of Grade Level Objective and Related Activities
Pre-Kindergarten through 2nd Grade:
- Objective: To make the country and culture of China real to the students.
- Activities:
- José the Bear was created at Build–A-Bear and traveled with the faculty members throughout China.
- Students watched the blog on televisions or the big screen, held discussions, and responded accordingly. Student questions were included within the response to the travelers.
- Additional activities were planned by the grade level to assist in bringing the culture to life.
- Assessment: No quantitative assessment was given.
3rd and 4th Grade:
- Objective: To learn about China by virtually traveling with the faculty members.
- Activities:
- Passports were created for the 3rd and 4th graders outlining the location and itinerary of the teachers.
- Questions inside the passport dealt with different aspects of the Chinese culture and were answered as they followed the travelers daily activities.
- Students completed one page a day.
- Additional activities were included by each grade level to assist in bring the culture to life.
- Assessment: Passports activities were graded.
5th and 6th Grade:
- Objective: To learn about the Chinese culture by participating in a variety of hands-on Chinese related activities.
- Activities:
- Students in each homeroom used the information presented in the blog to participate in an Amazing Race.
- Challenges given to the students included various obstacles for the students to use problem-solving strategies.
- Points were awarded each day for the homeroom who met the goals of the activity first.
